Turn on, tune in, chill out!
17 June 2009
The IoP Graduate Lounge is now open and students and staff came together to inaugurate it on 16th June 2009.
The event was organised by the Education Support Team and the Student Forum and was officially opened by Institute Secretary and Director of Administration, Richard Barnard who said ‘Teaching and learning is at the heart of the IoP. As well as lectures and tutorials, there are important social elements to learning where individuals across disciplines meet and exchange ideas. We have 850 students here and the new Graduate Lounge provides a space for them to relax and meet other students. The IoP is pleased to be able to offer its students this facility on the Denmark Hill Campus.’
The project was part funded by the IoP and the Graduate School who helped make the refurbishment of the space possible and the King’s Annual Fund who contributed to furnishing and equipping the lounge.
The lounge is open 24 hours a day and is accessible by swipe card. It has a fully fitted kitchen including a dishwasher, coffee making facilities, PC’s with internet and email access, as well as plush leather sofas and a plasma screen. A striking addition to the room is a permanent display of works by the artist David Beales, who has exhibited at the IoP Gallery.
Professor Vaughan Robinson, Director of the Graduate School at King’s said ‘King’s believes that sharing experiences and discussing research with peers are integral to a successful doctoral experience. The Graduate School is delighted to see the opening of the College’s third Graduate Lounge, to add to those in the Waterloo and Strand campuses.’
