The new face of the Institute of Psychiatry
Taking inspiration from the ‘Wall of Fame’ on the King’s central campuses, the Institute of Psychiatry (IoP) at King’s main entrance has been transformed with a series of new picture windows.
The objective of the project was to communicate the diverse elements which makes the IoP one of the leading centres for psychiatry, psychology, mental health and neuroscience in the world and to ensure that the building is welcoming to visitors, staff, students, and local community.
The project team and the designers Atelier Works, worked closely with staff and students to create a flavour of the IoP across 12 themes.

Richard Barnard, Director of Administration, said: 'We’ve long been aware that our world-class institution doesn’t have the frontage it deserves. We hope the result enriches the walk along De Crespigny Park and helps demonstrate to visitors and the local community what the IoP has achieved, and what we strive towards. Response from students and staff has been extremely positive, with many crediting the overall transformation of the entrance and the improvements to the ground floor, with increasing their sense of pride in the Institute.'
Since late 2012 the main building has become a rejuvenated modern space with the completion of the refurbished Wolfson Lecture Theatre, main reception and the creation of the ‘Education Hub’. The next project for the IoP is a new library which is due to open in September 2013.
King’s overall aim was to provide dynamic and flexible learning and teaching facilities for students and staff as well as an accessible modern environment for all visitors, with the new frontage giving an indication of the pioneering work the IoP undertakes.
