Sir Michael Rutter interviewed for #LetsTalkMentalHealth

Professor Sir Michael Rutter from the IoPPN has been interviewed by Jack Welch, a vocal advocate for people with learning disabilities, as part of a video series published during Mental Health Awareness Week 2018.

Louise Arseneault, who is Professor of Developmental Psychology at the IoPPN and ESRC Mental Health Leadership Fellow has led the series of five interviews, titled #LetsTalkMentalHealth to broadcast the expertise of leading figures in the field.

In the interview, Sir Michael discusses the importance of being a questioning scientist, the development of mental health in the public during his career, and wanting his legacy to be a supportive approach to junior colleagues. Considered the father of child psychology, Sir Michael is the founder of the MRC Social, Genetic & Developmental Psychiatry Centre at the IoPPN.

Jack spoke about his personal experiences with autism and how his diagnosis has helped him engage with the community and campaign with charities such as Autistica.

The aim of Let’s Talk Mental Health is to disseminate knowledge, skills and expertise to the general public and those interested in pursuing careers in mental health.  The project utilised the knowledge of service users to conduct the interviews and aims to portray the skills and experiences of individuals with lived experiences of mental health conditions.
