Lifetime achievement award for Prof Janet Treasure
Professor Janet Treasure from the Institute of Psychiatry at King’s College London has been awarded a lifetime achievement award by the Academy for Eating Disorders (AED).
Professor Treasure is an internationally renowned expert in eating disorders. She is Professor of Psychiatry in the IoP’s Eating Disorders Section in the Department of Psychological Medicine and Director of the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust’s Eating Disorders Unit at the Bethlem Royal Hospital.
The AED is a global professional organisation for experts in eating disorders research, education, treatment and prevention, and its lifetime achievement award is only given under exceptional circumstances, when the AED recognise an individual’s contribution to the field.
Professor Treasure has worked as part of clinical and research teams at SLaM and the IoP for over 30 years. Much of her research has focused on the causes of eating disorders and the translation of these findings into new treatments.
These include the development of the first ever self-care manual for bulimia. The manual used cognitive behaviour therapy techniques and has now been adapted to be delivered online. She was also instrumental in developing new psychological therapies for adults with anorexia which target personality traits and thinking styles. Over 700 eating disorder therapists have now been trained in delivering the interventions.
Professor Shitij Kapur, Dean and Head of School at the IoP at King’s said: “Congratulations to Janet on this very prestigious award. Janet is a world leading clinician and researcher in the field of eating disorders and this is a well-deserved achievement.”
Professor Treasure is also the Chief Medical Officer for Beat (the main UK eating disorder charity), and was awarded an OBE for Services to People with Eating Disorders in the 2013 New Year’s Honours.
The award will be presented to Professor Treasure on 29th March 2014 at the International Conference on Eating Disorders in New York.
