Public Engagement: Alzheimer's Disease Open Day

Each spring the Institute of Psychiatry (IoP) opens its doors and welcomes the public to a day where scientists and students showcase their cutting edge research at the Alzheimer's disease Open Day.

Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease are devastating and sadly all too common.  Researchers at the IoP are studying these diseases – their causes, possible cures and the effects on sufferers and carers.  People travel from all over the UK for a rare opportunity to see first hand the work we do and meet the scientists who do it.

The day begins with a series of guided tours where the public meet and talk to the scientists in their research laboratories and the day ends with a question and answer session with a panel of experts chaired by Professor Simon Lovestone, Director of the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre for Mental Health.

The Alzheimer’s disease Open Day is co-hosted by Alzheimer’s Research UK and the Medical Research Council Centre for Neurodeneration Research at King's College London.

Please see below and right for films of the open day and some of the research covered.
