Professor Shergill named Academic Researcher of the Year 2015
Professor Sukhwinder Shergill from the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN), King’s College London, has been named Academic Researcher of the Year 2015 by the Royal College of Psychiatrists at the RCPsych Awards 2015.
He was presented with the award at a prestigious ceremony hosted by Reverend Richard Coles at the College headquarters in London on 10 November 2015.
The annual RCPsych Awards mark the highest level of achievement within psychiatry, and are designed to recognise and reward excellent practice in the field of mental health.
The judging panel described Professor Shergill as the ‘unanimous choice’ and a ‘well-deserved recipient’ of the award. They added: 'Professor Sukhi Shergill is an exemplary academic clinician and has demonstrated excellence in research and clinical work.'
Professor Shergill said: ‘I’m very grateful for the award from the Royal College of Psychiatrists. I’ve found that carrying out research in clinical disorders is never an individual endeavour and I’ve been extremely fortunate in having fantastic colleagues, on both clinical and academic fronts, who have inspired, guided and supported me during my almost two decades spent at the IoPPN and the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM). Equally, I view this award as a tribute to the patients and carers within our SLaM services who have given so generously of their time to progress our knowledge of psychosis and its treatment.’
Sukhwinder Shergill is Professor of Psychiatry and Systems Neuroscience at the IoPPN and consultant psychiatrist at SLaM. His research explores the brain mechanisms underlying psychosis and the testing of novel treatments. He has an excellent track record in teaching, and supporting younger academics and trainees to integrate research into their careers.
Professor Neil Greenberg of the IoPPN was also among the nominees, in the Psychiatrist of the Year category.
The prize for Psychiatric Team of the Year was won by the Centre for Interventional Paediatric Psychopharmacology and Rare Diseases at SLaM.
