Professor Shitij Kapur, Dean and Head of School of King’s College London’s Institute of Psychiatry was appointed Honorary Doctor at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen at a special ceremony on Friday.
Over the past twenty years Professor Kapur has made substantial contributions to the psychiatric field in order to understand the neurochemical and functional basis of schizophrenia and its treatment. Professor Kapur’s work, combining clinical experience, basic science, psychological theories, and computational models has led to new hypotheses for the development of psychosis.
Professor Kapur says: “I am delighted to be appointed as Honorary Doctor at the University of Copenhagen. The University of Copenhagen shares the Institute of Psychiatry’s devotion to the field of schizophrenia research. This has brought us together in the past, and I hope that my appointment will lead to further successful collaborations in the future.”
Professor Birte Glenthøj from the University of Copenhagen says: “Professor Kapur’s academic work is a source of continuous inspiration for us at the University of Copenhagen, and we rejoice in the thought of being able to benefit from his future attachment to our Faculty. It is with pride and great pleasure that the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences welcomes Professor Kapur as Honorary Doctor.”
Professors Glenthøj and Kapur have collaborated over many years, and amongst other initiatives, together helped establish the Lundbeck Foundation Centre of Excellence for Clinical Intervention and Neuropsychiatric Schizophrenia Research (CINS) at the University of Copenhagen in 2009. King’s Institute of Psychiatry and CINS collaborate on pioneering research into understanding and optimising the treatment of schizophrenia.
