Professor Philip McGuire wins NARSAD 2010 Distinguished Investigator Award
02 August 2010
Philip McGuire, Head of the Department of Psychosis Studies and Professor of Psychiatry and Cognitive Neuroscience, Institute of Psychiatry (IoP) at King’s, has won a 2010 NARSAD Distinguished Investigator Award. He is one of only two researchers outside the US to receive this prestigious award.
The National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD) is a US-based charity which raises money to advance research on the causes, treatment and prevention of psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder and anxiety disorders, and childhood disorders that include autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. It supports leading and promising scientists and continues to support them as they develop the next generation of diagnostics and treatments.
NARSAD’s Distinguished Investigator programme assists senior scientists who are on the threshold of a breakthrough in mental health research or wish to pursue a novel research idea. Professor McGuire’s study aims use imaging methods to detect changes in the structure, function and chemistry of the brain in individuals at very high risk of psychosis. This will reveal how the brain changes as the disorder first develops. The research will improve understanding of the onset of psychosis and will provide a rational basis for the development of novel forms of treatment.
Professor McGuire said: 'I am delighted to have been given this Distinguished Investigator Award. I hope that this research will help us understand more about the changes in the brains of those who develop psychosis, which may help with the development of new treatments.'
