Our Inaugural Lectures are given by newly arrived or promoted professors. 

The aim of the series is to provide an opportunity for new professors to introduce themselves, present an overview of their own contribution to their field and to highlight the latest developments in a discipline to an audience consisting of both members of the University and the general public.

Every year, the Institute of Psychiatry opens its doors to 150 members of the public to showcase cutting edge dementia research at the Alzheimer's Disease Open Day.

The Open Day is co-hosted by Alzheimer’s Research UK, a UK dementia research charity.

Our MRC Social, Genetic & Developmental Psychiatry Centre (SGDP)  has been home to art exhibitions since its opening.

Featuring artists (many who are local) who often have some connection to work in the mental health sector and/or suffer/have suffered from mental illness themselves, exhibitions  usually run for approximately 3 months at a time.

We are very excited our last project is now finished. Our short film IoPPN Science of Addiction & Mental Health: Cannabis & Psychosis covering information about the use of skunk and its connection to psychosis is now available.

The project, targeted at a young audience, was organised by Dr Teresa Rodriguez (Basic and Clinical Neuroscience Department) and Dr Kyle Dyer (Addiction department) and funded by the KCL Widening Participation Team. During 4 sessions 14 students (year 10) from Swanlea school visited the IoPPN over two consecutive weeks. After an introduction to the project and training on how to film and conduct an interview, the students received information about cannabis and psychosis from IoPPN researchers including how cannabis works in the brain, how genetics/environments feed into risks, the role of neuroimaging in understanding brain function and our current knowledge about the link between cannabis and psychosis. The students then conducted interviews with key researchers and educators capturing a behind-the-scenes feel to the science and education offered at the IoPPN. The final session was a creative encounter with two contemporary artists who inspired the students to produce some artwork related to the subject.

The Art of Psychiatry (AoP) Society was formed to explore the shared elements between the arts and psychiatry by a group of psychiatrists from the Institute of Psychiatry and the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. 

This society hosts a range of activities throughout the year which are open to the public.
