Dermatological and non-mucosal biofilms

Biofilms represent the normal mode of growth for many microbial species that populate the body. As well as studying mucosal surfaces, there is major work across the MBRH looking at how changes in microbial communities and trauma result in biofilm associated conditions of the skin and at other non-mucosal sites in the body. One focus is characterising the links between microbial dysbiosis and the development of dermatitis and chronic back pain. Other activities include studying microbial communities that promote diabetic ulcers and nail infections and determining how microbial biofilms contribute to wound progression.

Dermatological and non-mucosal biofilms is a research project of the Multiscale Biofilm Research Hub. Find out more about the Hub here: https://www.kcl.ac.uk/research/mbrh.

Other research groups involved in the project include: Alexander, Jones, Mason, Moyes, Shaw, Sutton, Torraca, Williams.
