Biography
Michael Bankole initially joined the Department of Political Economy in January 2018. He completed his PhD in Political Economy at King’s College London, where his doctoral research examined the substantive representation of ethnic minorities in Britain by ethnic minority Members of Parliament following the 2017 General Election. He also holds a BSc (Hons) in Sociology from the University of Surrey and an MSc in Democracy and Comparative Politics from University College London (UCL).
During his time as a PhD student at King’s College London, Michael played a leading role in establishing the Raheem Sterling Scholarships, which support Black British students from low-income backgrounds to access higher education.
After completing his PhD, he took up a Lectureship in Politics at Royal Holloway, University of London, where he taught for three years. During this time, he convened and delivered undergraduate modules in politics, British politics, race, and quantitative research methods.
Michael is passionate about making his research accessible beyond academia. His writing has appeared in The Independent, Tribune Magazine, and The Conversation, and he has provided political commentary for the BBC, ITV News, Sky News, Channel 4 News, LBC, Al Jazeera, and Novara Media.
