Our internationally renowned department fosters a vibrant research environment that aims to equip and inspire researchers to address technological and societal challenges. We welcome postgraduate researchers from the UK and all over the world to further their aspirations as part of this goal. The Department of Engineering has an international reputation in the fields of energy, information systems, robotics and telecommunications with increasing strengths in systems engineering, control, material science and thermofluids. We have a strong grant portfolio in all our major areas of activity. The Department is strongly interested in multidisciplinary research at the interfaces between Engineering, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Computer Science and Medicine. Partner organisations: We partner across interdisciplinary boundaries at King’s including the health schools and hospitals, and national and international universities, on wide-ranging themes covering the arts and humanities, law, healthcare, and social sciences. We also partner with policy makers, industry and cultural leaders.

Our supervisors are internationally recognised leaders in their fields and we welcome eminent visiting academics to present their work in seminars and events. We have links with industry, business and national and international policymakers.
The Department is located in state of the art, refurbished facilities on the Strand Campus in the heart of central London. We have 3,000 square metres of new labs and social spaces equipped with cutting edge equipment, enabling researchers to move from theory to problem solving to creating new products. This unique environment aims to nurture and develop world-class transformational activity from King’s engineers.
We are also close to the British Computer Society and the Institute of Engineering &Technology (and the IET Library), with access to a formidable collection of scientific journals and other technical material.
Our PhD students have access to high quality library facilities and designated PhD offices. Regular group seminars are organised providing PhD students with the chance to showcase their research and receive feedback from academic staff and peers. PhD students also have access to college-based training in transferable and research skills through the King’s Doctoral College and the NMES Graduate School.
Faculty and College induction courses are scheduled at the beginning of your degree to prepare you for life as a PhD student. All students are required to complete 10 days of training each year.
There is a centrally provided programme of training coordinated by the Kings Doctoral College and the NMES Graduate School offers a range of unique training for our students with a focus to support PhD research and the PhD journey. It also organises a variety of social and research events for students from hosting the NMES PGR Welcome event, Science walking tours, Winter and Summer social parties, Movie and board game nights, to Presentation and Writing coffee mornings, a space for students to present their research work to peers and receive feedback and one of the highlights in the NMES PGR calendar is the Research Competition, where 3rd year students across all five departments present their research in a 3-minute video culminating in an in-person event where all finalist videos are viewed, and the winners receive their prize.
Research students are also encouraged to submit papers to conferences and support them to travel to present their papers and posters.
Our research students are also encouraged to teach alongside their studies to help prepare them for a potential future career in academia.
