The Research Management & Innovation Directorate (RMID) at King’s is dedicated to providing comprehensive and wide-ranging professional support across the research ecosystem. This includes ensuring that the university maintains and develops relationships and research partnerships with funding organisations both domestically and internationally; leading King’s work on capital funding bids; and managing the university’s investment in research.
Led by Director Dr Bryony Wakefield, RMID works closely with Vice President (Research & Innovation) Professor Bashir M. Al-Hashimi and the Vice-Principals, in collaboration with research management colleagues across the Faculties and our partners, to provide the best environment, support and networks for our community, from postgraduate research students to senior academics. Our teams of professional services staff provide advice, support, platforms and services to our research community.

Dr Bryony Wakefield, Director, Research Management & Innovation Directorate
Bry is Director of the Research Management & Innovation Directorate, leading the strategic and operational direction of each of the area’s functions. As functional lead, Bry is responsible for the service delivery model for research and innovation across the whole university and works collaboratively with Faculty leads to ensure services are aligned to university strategy and business needs.

Dr Richard A Christie, Director of e-Research
Richard leads a team who help to enable and facilitate computational- and data-intensive research across King’s. We are developing core infrastructure platforms upon which this research is carried out, and we're growing a team to help support and train PhD students and post-docs to make efficient use of these platforms.
Dr Mark Cox, Head of Research Information Systems
Mark leads a team responsible for the ongoing management and enhancement of our research information systems to ensure process efficiencies and the consistency, completeness and accuracy of all research-relevant data. The team also supports the development and implementation of new research information systems, delivers standardised research reports and provides system training and support.
Dr Nigel Eady, Director of Research Talent
Nigel leads the teams of staff supporting our 4000 doctoral researchers (through King’s Doctoral College) and 2100 research staff (through the Centre for Research Staff Development). These units deliver a broad portfolio of personal, professional and career development opportunities, support and advocate for this crucial researcher community, have oversight of governance, regulatory and quality assurance frameworks for doctoral research, and deliver the university’s prestigious doctoral scholarship programmes.
Dr Tom Foulkes, Director of Research Strategy & Performance
Tom leads the Research Strategy and Performance team, which focuses on supporting and enhancing King’s research. This includes overall university research strategy, research development support for funding applications, and data-driven insights into performance. It also includes research and impact assessment exercises (REF, KEF) and support for wider impact activity. The team runs a wide variety of internal funding and training programmes designed to support our research ambitions, and manages key academic external partnerships.
Dr Lloyd Gregory, Director of Joint Research Office
Lloyd leads the King’s College London (KCL) and Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT) Joint Research Office (JRO), driving and creating efficiencies that enhance the initiation and delivery of translational and clinical research across the two organisations.
Paul Labbett, Director of Research Grants & Contracts
Paul has oversight of the administrative, financial and legal aspects of King’s portfolio of externally-funded research and consultancy projects, from application submission, legal agreements (including Confidentiality Agreements, Material Transfer Agreements etc) and formal acceptance through to financial administration, compliance, reporting and credit control.
Marice Lunny, Director of Research Governance, Ethics and Integrity
Marice and her team support our research community to ensure that research is conducted to the highest ethical standards, in compliance with research governance requirements. This includes international regulations and enabling good research conduct through the provision of research integrity advice and guidance.
Dr Jo Martindale, Director of Research Platforms
As Director of Research Platforms, Jo leads a dynamic and diverse team of people who are striving to provide researchers with access to the best facilities and services to enable their research. In a constantly evolving environment, Jo ensures our objectives, priorities and targets align with the wider research strategy.
Caroline Murphy, Director of Operations King's Clinical Trials Unit
Caroline Murphy is Director of Operations for the UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC) registered King’s Clinical Trials Unit and supports the delivery of the NIHR Research Support Service hub at King's. Supported by her senior team, she leads a group of operations experts in clinical trials, including database managers, project managers, trial administrators, pharmacists, IT programmers and quality assurance staff.

Ann-Marie Murtagh, Director King's Health Partners Clinical Trials Office
Ann-Marie is the Director of the Kings Health Partners Clinical Trial Office (KHP CTO), leading a team to deliver on two key areas where responsibility has been delegated from all four KHP Partners (King's College London, King's College Hospital, Guy's & St Thomas' Foundation Trust and South London and Maudsley). Area one manages Partner activities related to the set-up, conduct and performance management of commercial clinical trials. Area two relates to the set-up of non-commercial CTiMP (drug studies) sponsored by one or more of the Partners with a focus on ensuring the delivery of the statutory obligations contingent on sponsorship of trials.
Dr Mike Shaw, Director of King’s Innovation Catalyst
Mike leads the King’s Innovation Catalyst team, which helps King’s researchers unlock commercial opportunities to create impact at scale from innovation. The department is comprised of three teams that provide end-to-end support and management of the innovation pipeline: the Translational Research Office, Industry Research Partnerships Office, and Intellectual Property and Licensing Team. Together, King’s Innovation Catalyst support King’s researchers to win translational grants for launching early ideas beyond the lab, secure collaborations and licensing deals with industry and other partners, and spin out new ventures. We connect King’s research talent with industry and funders to champion a diverse portfolio of breakthrough technologies and life-changing innovations.
