Biography

Dr Hayk Kupelyants teaches conflict of laws, commercial law and arbitration at King's College London. He is a member of the Centre for International Governance and Dispute Resolution (CIGAD).

Before joining King's College London, he was a University Lecturer at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Homerton College, University of Cambridge. He holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge which received the Yorke Prize of the Law Faculty. He is also the recipient of the Diploma in private international law of the Hague Academy of International Law. He held visiting positions at the Max Planck Institutes in Hamburg and Luxembourg, University of Heidelberg and Yerevan State University.

His monograph Sovereign Defaults before Domestic Courts (Oxford University Press, 2018), described as “groundbreaking” by Sir William Blair, remains the leading text on sovereign debt litigation, and is regularly cited as an authority before the English courts hearing sovereign debt matters. Hayk has published extensively, including in the British Yearbook of International Law, Journal of Private International Law, the Max Planck Enclyclopedia of International Law and Cambridge Law Journal.

Hayk is admitted as a solicitor of England & Wales and has previously practiced international dispute resolution in the City of London. Hayk is a Member of the Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and of the Arbitration Council of the Arbitration and Mediation Centre of Armenia (AMCA). Hayk is also a member of the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR.

Research Interests

Hayk Kupelyant's research is concerned with all aspects of private international law and international arbitration, both commercial and investment, with particular reference to commercial and investment disputes and issues concerning jurisdiction, cross-border injunctions, the act of State doctrine and sovereign debt litigation.
