Faculty of Arts & Humanities Supervisory Excellence Award winners announced

Dr Carlo Nicolai in the Department of Philosophy and Dr Áine McMurtry from the Department of Languages, Literatures & Cultures, have been announced as joint winners of the Supervisory Excellence Awards 2024 for the Faculty of Arts & Humanities.

Dr Áine McMurtry and Dr Carlo Nicolai
Dr Áine McMurtry, Reader in German, and Dr Carlo Nicolai, Reader in Logic, won the Supervisory Excellence Awards 2024.

Dr McMurtry was also chosen as the overall winner from across all King's faculties for her ongoing commitment to supporting doctoral students.

PhD supervision has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my career at King’s and I’ve been lucky to work with all my postgraduate students. The chance to accompany a project from its conceptual beginnings, support the gradual emergence of an overarching thesis, and keep faith as it takes flight is both a privilege and a responsibility, especially when working in a minor discipline in the contemporary Humanities. I’m grateful to both my students and the Faculty for this recognition award.

Dr Áine McMurtry, Reader in German — Department of Languages, Literatures & Cultures

I am very happy for this award. It is always a great pleasure to work with passionate and committed graduate students. King's is recognised as a leading research university, and its graduate research community contributes greatly to its standing.

Dr Carlo Nicolai, Reader in Logic — Department of Philosophy

The awards, which were established in 2006 by the King’s Doctoral College, recognise and celebrate exemplary PhD supervision across King’s and the Faculty winners were chosen from over 30 nominees.

Each year, hundreds of doctoral researchers complete PhDs and other doctoral degrees at King’s, before going on to academia, research, industry, and beyond. Central to every successful doctorate is the close support of their supervisory team, whose expertise and experience will help shapes their project.

Many congratulations to all those nominated from the Faculty of Arts & Humanities:
