Role purpose

• Take a lead role in the statistical aspects of clinical trials and other epidemiological research studies relevant to populations with complex health needs with a particular focus on the distinctive research divisions of the Faculty, in particular, palliative care, holistic care in long term conditions and digital health innovations. • Contribute as appropriate to, and work closely with, the core King’s Clinical Trial Unit. • Develop collaborative structures and working with statisticians and epidemiologists in the university. • Design and deliver post-graduate taught education within the Faculty.

Key responsibilities

Key responsibilities are to: Research (80%) • Contribute fully to developing and enhancing the research profile of the Faculty and the University, nationally and internationally, including establishing a continued track record of high-quality research and publication. • Develop research objectives, projects and proposals in line with the Faculty’s research programmes. • Conduct individual and/or collaborative research projects. • Identify sources of funding and contribute to the process of securing funds. • Provide expert high-quality statistical input into the planning, protocols, funding applications, studies, analysis and write up of significant, original and rigorous complex clinical trials and epidemiological studies in the Faculty and with selected high-quality partners. • Actively support researchers within the Faculty during the set up and conduct of trials, ensuring that any aspects of the trial in relation to the data quality and data credibility are considered, discussed and the key decisions documented appropriately. • Secure research funding from multiple sources, involving other Faculty and university teams wherever possible. • Develop innovative approaches to research and new statistical analysis methods and approaches. • Oversee and perform statistical analyses and reporting of data arising from randomised controlled trials and other study designs where appropriate, including Data Monitoring Committee reports. • Contribute to, develop and maintain high quality complex clinical trials and related research projects. • Build statistics and epidemiology capacity within the faculty • Supervise and train postgraduate research students to ensure their effective development. Education (20%) • Contribute to the ongoing development, design and delivery of education curricula, in a manner that supports a research-led approach to student learning. • Extend, transform and apply knowledge acquired from research to teaching and appropriate external activities. • Use appropriate teaching, learning support and assessment methods. • Supervise student research projects. • Contribute to the planning, design and development of objectives and material. Teamwork and support (Research & Education) • Maintain excellent working relationships with investigators, staff and students in the Faculty research divisions and teaching departments, the King’s Clinical Trials Unit and clinical teams to promote the development of complex clinical trials. • Participate in the training, mentorship and management of research statisticians. • Play a broader leadership role in the Faculty, contributing to the growth and development of our people and the wider organisation. The Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care

The Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care (NMPC) is a world-leading centre for education, training and research. In the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject, we are ranked number 2 in the world for nursing (including midwifery). In addition, we hold two Athena Swan Silver awards. The world’s only purpose built Institute for Palliative care, the Cicely Saunders Institute, is part of our Faculty. The 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF2021) placed King’s applied and allied health research 1st for: overall proportion of research rated 4* (world-leading, the best mark possible), research outputs rated 4*, impact rated 4*, environment rated 4*(joint), and in Grade Point Average and Power. REF2021 rated as world-leading: 100% of our environment, 86% of our impact and 70% of our research overall. Over 95% of our research overall was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent. King’s has nine academic faculties, with health research and education at King’s comprising four interdisciplinary faculties – the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery and Palliative Care, the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine, the Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences, and the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience. The Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience is a leading centre for mental health and neuroscience research in Europe. It produces more highly cited outputs (top 1% citations) on psychiatry and mental health than any other centre (SciVal 2021), and on this metric has risen from 16th (2014) to 4th (2021) in the world for highly cited neuroscience outputs. In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF), 90% of research at the IoPPN was deemed ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ (3* and 4*). World-leading research from the IoPPN has made, and continues to make, an impact on how we understand, prevent and treat mental illness, neurological conditions, and other conditions that affect the brain.   King’s Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine is one of the largest and most successful centres for research and education in the UK. Our schools of education deliver a comprehensive education and training portfolio, including undergraduate health and a suite of related BSc programmes in Biomedical Sciences. The School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences (BMEIS) is part of an investment plan of an Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council investment, with the King’s Health Partners Digital Health Hub (£2.6m award) supporting the development of new digital technologies and reduce the time it takes for these to benefit patients. The Faculty is also home to the Respiratory Physiology and Medicine Group which aims to better our understanding of respiratory physiology in health & disease with the aim of improving clinical care. Within our Faculty of Natural, Mathematics & Engineering Sciences is King’s Institute for Artificial Intelligence bringing together the diverse and growing community in artificial intelligence (AI) at the university, whilst the London Medical Imaging and AI Centre for Value-Based Healthcare uses advanced imaging and AI technologies to optimise both patient care and hospital operations. Our Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy is home to the NIHR Policy Research Unit in Health and Social Care Workforce, which has been funded again as part of a recent £25m funding to tackle health and social care issues.
