Understanding the Mariana's dam collapse and its legal case

Bush House North East Wing, Strand Campus, London

23Octdigital law

On 21st October one of the largest lawsuits in UK history starts – for the size of the case and victims' compensations. In 2015 Brazil experienced its worst ever environmental disaster – affecting nearly a million people and devastating wildlife along the Doce river in Minas Gerais. The victims of that tragedy are taking the mining companies responsible for the disaster to court in London.

The King's Brazil Institute will host an event to listen to the stories of the victims and understand how the lawsuit has evolved and why it came to the UK. This is an opportunity for students in law, politics, and environmental sciences to gain familiarity in this innovative law case. This is also a chance for those who have followed this tragic disaster to listen to survivors.

This event is a learning opportunity for a number of reasons:

  1. It is the first time Brazilian environmental law is being used in a UK court
  2. It is the largest class action in English history - with over 600,000 people voluntarily opting in to join the trial
  3. It is a very recent legal precedent where large multinational companies are being held responsible for the crimes of their subsidiary companies. We are using that precedent in a big way, and it should open the door for many more such trials.

Please note that this event will be held in Portuguese
