About this event
Recording of this event (YouTube, 1hr)
The LGBTQ+ life courses - health and social care research webinar series is co-hosted by HSCWRU at KCL and Primary Care and Population Health, University College London.
Research shows that, on average, the LGBTQ+ community experience poorer health and wellbeing in later life. This is as a result of inequalities which can accumulate throughout the life course. The webinar series aims to bring together those interested in topics relating to life course health and wellbeing for the LGBTQ+ community relevant to health and social care.
The webinar series has so far hosted talks on the importance of the topic, lived experiences of having a partner with dementia, initiatives in care homes, a review of adult social care assessments for LGBTQ+ older adults, the needs and experiences of LGBTQ+ prisoners (the latest event, which drew 40 attendees) and thinking about the needs of trans+ patients.
A new YouTube channel brings together the recordings of these webinars for those unable to attend.

This event looks at LGBTQ+ adults in the prison system, presenting findings from two studies:
Kayleigh Charlton, Research Associate at Children and Young People's Centre for Justice
"LGBTQ+ pains of imprisonment: A letter writing study"
This presentation will explore some of the findings from a small-n letter writing study with LGBTQ+ prisoners in the UK. This study was conducted during a period of unrest surrounding the rights and placement of transgender prisoners in the UK prison system. The letters draw out a series of LGBTQ+ specific pains of imprisonment including bullying and discrimination, uncertainty and belonging and lack of LGBTQ+ specific support and resources.
Sally Evans, Chartered & Registered Forensic Psychologist
“To explore the lived experiences of trans and gender diverse prisoners residing in the women’s prison estate”
This presentation will outline the findings from a study into the lived experiences of trans and gender diverse (TGD) prisoners residing in the women’s prison estate in England & Wales. In-depth interviews were carried out with 7 participants from across 4 women’s prisons. This presentation will explore the four main themes which emerged from the interviews, including how structural support met TGD prisoners needs, how gender affirmation influenced wellbeing, how interpersonal interactions were understood, and the impact of discrimination.
