02 October 2024

Each year the King’s Enterprise Award invites students and staff from across King’s to develop entrepreneurial skills to enhance their future, whatever that might hold. Nadine Louise Mostert, completed the award alongside her studies in MSc International Marketing. Here she shares her experience, insights and key learnings.

Unpacking my expectations

I began my Enterprise Award journey with curiosity and anticipation, keen to find out more about entrepreneurship and the entrepreneurial ecosystem. I initially expected a focus on start-ups, but soon realised this award would help me gain direction to either start a business or become an effective team leader or manager.

I focused on the Get it Done, Build Teams and Think Lean skills, to improve my efficiency, challenge my perfectionism and gain insight into different teamwork strategies and dynamics.

I did not expect the experience to tell me so much about myself. The Award did not just enhance my knowledge, but also my way of thinking and ability to apply the information I learned.– Nadine Louise Mostert

From Me to We

I participated in pivotal experiences including the Entrepreneurial Mindset Training and Build Teams workshops. These gave me a deeper understanding of teamwork and helped me to reflect on past challenges when working in a team.

By progressing through the various challenges, I started becoming a team leader myself, developing better collaboration between group members during tasks. I found I was kinder to myself and lessened my perfectionist habits by placing more trust in the group members I was working with.

Perfectionism on pause

Hearing from real entrepreneurs at events run by the Entrepreneurship Institute was truly insightful. Witnessing their perseverance and discipline, highlighted the importance of continuous progress to me. As a perfectionist this usually holds me back, but seeing these similar traits in others really motivated me to practice and implement the Seven Skills of an Entrepreneurial Mindset more proactively.

The workshops were always very hands-on and often delivered by externals who had real experience of the skills, so could give feedback in real time and provide insight that I have not heard elsewhere.– Nadine Louise Mostert

Key learnings

The Enterprise Award increased my understanding of effective teamwork, providing practical tools for university projects and beyond. The workshops were always very hands-on and often delivered by externals who had real experience of the skills, so could give feedback in real time and provide insight that I have not heard elsewhere.

Since completing the award, I have applied my enhanced teamwork skills to shape different team dynamics. When it comes to large teams, I have newfound capabilities that enable me to better manage and lead members with competing interests and priorities. I now feel better equipped to be more efficient and face challenges head on.
