Course essentials

Our Digital Media and Culture BA explores theories of digital culture and media and teaches you how to apply those concepts.

The first year of this digital media and culture degree will give you a taste of everything you need to know with a variety of required modules. You’ll think about different media forms, understand how media is created, learn about the evolution of the internet and how networked technologies work, explore how the digital world impacts politics, get to grips with the essential theories of new media, and more.

Your second year will be balanced between optional and required modules that will further strengthen your knowledge of digital culture and digital media theory and teach you how to apply these concepts. You’ll also get the opportunity to select from a range of optional modules to focus your studies, including modules on social media, digital culture, digital methods, and beyond.

It’s also possible to study abroad during the second semester of your second year, thanks to partnerships with universities in the US, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Japan, and Denmark.

You’re free to shape your own curriculum in the final year of the Digital Media and Culture BA, with a variety of modules touching on topics like artificial intelligence, digital gaming, advertising and marketing, and more.

Throughout this digital media and culture degree, you’ll be given valuable training in digital research methods and data analysis. The first year will see you learn how to conduct your own research, while the second will teach you how to interrogate your data and work with it effectively.

This culminates with a dissertation in your final year when you’ll get to answer a research question with a traditional thesis or produce a digital culture project.

There are a number of extracurricular opportunities offered to support your learning, including practical skills-based labs that will help you enhance your academic writing, develop your coding skills, improve your transferable professional skills and prepare for interviews.

You will also be invited to additional events, such as talks and symposiums on global digital cultures, that are organised by the Department of Digital Humanities. With so many cultural institutions on your doorstep, you’ll be able to explore a range of museums, galleries and beyond in person.
