Hi, I'm Shafqat, a Clinical Psychotherapy MSc student at KCL! I am originally from Pakistan, born and raised in Italy but have been living in Germany :) I would be happy to answer all of your questions about the university, my studies, student life, or anything else!

As an outline, the programme consists of 5 modules.
1) Foundations in Clinical Psychotherapy
In the Foundations in Clinical Psychotherapy module, topics have included: models of the mind, knowing what psychoanalysts do, transference and countertransference, therapeutic practice and the setting, Freud's case histories and the evolution of the Oedipus complex, Melanie Klein anxiety and guild, manic stats, psychic development, culture and ethnicity, work of Anna Freud, adolescent development, introduction to Winnicott, Bion, Lacan representation, adult development and loss, psychedelics and psychoanalysis, transference focused therapy, cognitive analytic therapy, schema therapy, and dynamic interpersonal therapy.
2) Advanced Topics in Clinical Psychotherapy
In the Advanced Topics in Clinical Psychotherapy, topics have included: psychosomatics and medical illness, mirror role of mother and family, psychosis, self-harm, perinatal psychoanalysis, forensic clinical cases, trauma concepts, dissociative identity disorder, culture and ethnicity, ethics, meta-cognitive theory, decision making conviction narrative theory, mourning and melancholia, applying psychoanalysis to economics and finance, brainwashing and paranoia.
3) Biological, Cognitive and Developmental Processes, Research Design and Methods
In the Biological, Cognitive and Developmental Processes, Research Design and Methods module, topics have included: basic cognitive processes, animal models, learning and memory, consciousness, executive functions, cognition in severe mental health disorders, clinical perspective of affective disorders, biological processes: genetics, epigenetics and transcriptomics, neuroanatomy of social and emotional functions, brain function, neuropharmacology, functional neurological disorders, research methods introduction and writing protocols, introduction to data analysis, SPSS, qualitative research design and analysis, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, comparing two groups, correlation and regression, general linear model, multiple linear regression, mediation, moderation, logistic regression, systematic reviews and meta-analysis.
4) Developmental, Individual Differences, Social and Cultural Processes
In the Developmental, Individual Differences, Social and Cultural Processes, topics have included: developmental processes: early life adversity and maltreatment, adolescent digital activity and mental health and wellbeing, individual differences: culture and diversity, attachment development, nature and nurture, social and cultural identity, psychoanalysis and anthropology, art-based methodologies, co-regulation in infants and parents/carers, clinical ethics of the doctor-patient relationship, ethics integration across multiple perspectives, and social relationships and mental health.
5) Research Dissertation
Please note: Foundations in Clinical Psychotherapy and Advanced Topics in Clinical Psychotherapy are based on British Psychanalytic Council (BPC) guidance. Biological, Cognitive and Developmental Processes, Research Design and Methods, and Developmental, Individual Differences, Social and Cultural Processes are based on British Psychological Society (BPS) guidance. We try to link each session with clinical case material as appropriate.
The Clinical Placement is an optional opportunity for students to observe some of the day to day activities in a clinical service. Activities could include observing a clinical service review meeting, joining a clinical visit, or volunteering in a clinical service. The placement is about 10 hours over several days or weeks, though some clinical services ask for longer commitment from students. The placements range from the Self Harm Outpatient Psychotherapy Service to National Affective Disorders Service, Psychotherapy Services, and Home Treatment Team service.
We have visits to the university Brain Bank, mock MRI scanner, and to the Freud Museum. Students are encouraged to attend the weekly Maudsley Grand Rounds and the Maudsley Lectures in Psychoanalysis. We also host weekly reflection groups for students.
For students who are interested in continuing into training in British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) Adult Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, please note that the training is a minimum of 4 years. The MSc course would provide 1 year towards the training as a full time student or 2 years as a part time student. For the remaining years, there will be a tuition fee for each year with the BPC member institution. The training involves three components: academic teaching, clinical work, and personal psychoanalytic psychotherapy. In personal psychoanalytic psychotherapy, the requirement is that this is conducted by a BPC registered psychoanalytic psychotherapist or psychoanalyst for the entire length of the training and continue at least until qualification. The MSc course can aid with suggestions.
The programme takes place on 2 days each week: Tuesday and Thursday. The start time is usually 10am and end time is 5 or 5:30pm (10:00-17:00 or 17:30).
There is a one hour lunch break usually 12:30 to 1:30pm (12:30-13:30), and there are breaks during the morning and afternoon sessions.
Please note: this is the current planned schedule. There might be some changes if required by the university.
