Postgraduate research funding
Postgraduate research funding opportunities.
If you have been offered a conditional or unconditional offer at King’s, congratulations! Below you will find some useful information and guidance for postgraduate offer holders.
Please note not all information is relevant to your offer.
Receiving an admissions offer does not indicate that you have been successful with any King’s funding that you may have applied for. You should wait for a funding award letter or contact the department responsible for the funding if this will impact your decision to accept an offer.
If your Faculty requires you to have a fully completed Project Approval Form and you cannot see this on King’s Apply – ‘Your Offer’ screen, please contact us as soon as possible using the “Decision – Offer” message category before you accept an offer.
The faculties that require a Project Approval Form are below:
If you receive an offer to study at King’s, you can accept the offer via your King’s Apply account on the ‘Your offer’ tab. This tab will show your offer letter and the deadline by which you need to accept this offer.
Before responding to your offer, please send a message to the Admissions team through King's Apply explaining why you feel your fee status is incorrect. You will likely be asked to complete a more detailed Fee Status Questionnaire or provide documentation to give further details of your circumstances in order for us to make an assessment.
We recommend you refer to the UK Council for International Student Affairs on how Home fee status can be determined. This information can be found on their England HE fee status webpage.
Your fee status must be changed before enrolment in order for the new status to be reflected in your fee invoice.
Your offer letter will state whether there is a deposit due to accept your offer, the deposit amount and the deadline by which you need to pay. You should accept your offer via your King’s Apply account on the ‘Your Offer’ screen.
When you are ready to accept your admissions offer, you should accept your offer via your King’s Apply account on the ‘Your Offer’ screen.
Most postgraduate research programmes do not require a deposit, but a few, such as the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and DClinDent Paediatric Dentistry, do.
Read the Deposit Terms and Conditions before making your deposit payment to understand the terms and conditions relating to refunds; this is included in your offer letter.
If you experience technical issues making a deposit payment, we recommend that you try making the payment on King's Apply once more as you will be able to accept the offer yourself. If you still experience problems, you should contact us on King’s Apply using the “Deposit Query” message category after making a payment by another recognised method, details about other payment methods can be found on our how to pay my fees webpage. Please submit supporting evidence that payment was paid by your acceptance deadline.
If you have been awarded a full scholarship, please send evidence of the sponsorship/scholarship before your acceptance deadline as a message through King's Apply using the “Deposit Query” message category. We can arrange for your deposit to be waived subject to you providing official documentation of your award. The letter must include:
If you receive confirmation that your tuition fees will be fully covered after you have paid your deposit, please send evidence of the sponsorship/scholarship through King's Apply with the same details requested above, and we will arrange to return your deposit.
You may be able to defer to the next available intake, you should send us a message on King’s Apply using the “Deferral Request” message category before making any arrangements.
Deferrals may not be possible but where this is approved, this would be at your own risk; should the academic staff member who agreed to supervise your project leave the university or the project you had applied to be involved with cease, we will not be able to enrol you. In these cases, the department may see whether other suitable projects are available, but we cannot guarantee that this will be possible.
Deferrals will not be approved where an academic condition is still outstanding, however you can inquire about a deferral if you have an outstanding English language condition. Please note: if a deferral to the next intake is approved, you will be subject to any increase in fees associated with this programme (including the tuition fees, and any bench fees that your faculty requires you to pay).
If you are given an offer which requires you to meet a condition(s) before your place can be confirmed, you need to send us a message on King’s Apply using the “Meeting Offer Conditions/Confirmation” message category with evidence that you met the conditions by the deadline stated in your offer letter.
We recommend you send the documentation as soon as you have received these from your university and/or English test provider.
You should attach your final, digital academic documents to a message using the “Meeting Offer Conditions/Confirmation” message category on King’s Apply, including translations of documents where relevant.
Digital documents will need to be verified. We are aware that institutions will use different methods for verification, so we encourage you to find out how they do this:
Ask your institution send us these documents directly via email to admissions-query@kcl.ac.uk (this is usually via an Awards/Student Registry or Records/Transcripts Office).
Once you have initiated one of these verification processes, please inform us by messaging us here on King’s Apply so we can add the verified document to your application. We ask that you allow 3 working days before contacting us again in order to give your university time to process your request.
Alternatively, we can also accept scans of the official transcript/certificate provided to you by the university. This must be a scan of the original copy and must not be a printout of a digital document. You can attach your scanned document in a message to us.
Please do not send other messages to us through this email address.
Please send your final documents to us, even if you have not been able to meet your academic condition. We will consider your application before making a final decision on whether your place can be confirmed on the programme.
You should update that you do need a student visa on your King’s Apply account in the Application Overview screen under each application. If you cannot see this section, please send our Visa Compliance team a message using the “Visa Query (including CAS)” message category.
Please ensure you have provided us with your current passport details and any additional documentation needed to process your visa, such as details of name changes, previous UK visas etc.
Please refer back to the offer letter to ensure you understand what is required from you if you need a student visa.
Please note that we do not begin the CAS process until you have accepted an offer, which was initially unconditional or you have met all conditions. We do not begin the visa process any earlier than six months before the start of your programme. We therefore ask that you do not contact us regarding your CAS until these two criteria have been met.
We will only begin to process your CAS once we are sure we have all the information we need from you to process this accurately.
The Visa Compliance team will get in touch with you to confirm the evidence required to submit a Student Visa application with a valid CAS. They aim to process CAS numbers as quickly as possible, but during peak periods there may be a delay. To help with the process, please ensure you have uploaded required supporting documentation as soon as possible (such as current passport/previous visas). Visa Compliance can then process your CAS without having to contact you to seek further documentation.
When Visa Compliance start the process, a new screen called ‘Your Visa’ will appear on your King’s Apply account (for the relevant application).
If you need to send our Visa Compliance team a message, you can do so on King’s Apply using the “Visa Query (including CAS)” message category. To ensure the visa team can work through CAS processing as quickly as possible, please only message for an update if there is a specific reason.
Please send our Visa Compliance team a message using the “Visa Query (including CAS)” message category and provide a copy of your passport so they can change it to reflect your name correctly.
Induction and enrolment usually take place up to two weeks before the start of the programme.
We will send enrolment details about four weeks before the start of your programme. For example, for September and October starting programmes, you should expect to receive enrolment information from mid-August onwards. Please note that the enrolment process is not handled directly by Admissions and if you have a specific enrolment query you should contact Student Services via our webpage.
Remember if you have conditions to meet on your offer you will need to provide evidence of meeting these and any other requirements before the enrolment process can begin. Failure to meet the stated deadlines may result in you losing your place on the programme.
The King’s Doctoral College aims to equip research students to excel. It runs Induction Sessions for all new postgraduate research students at the beginning of the academic year and midway through. The first session is in September, and is designed to provide students with a vital introduction to the training, support, and wide range of services available to them such as student welfare. Induction events also include contributions from current students and student representatives.
King's College London is committed to helping all students reach their full potential and have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of skills development programmes throughout the year. You and your supervisor should undertake a skills needs assessment at the start of your degree to determine the most important skills that you will need for your research. A full list of training courses offered by the university is available on the King’s Doctoral College Researcher Development webpages.
Research students can also access the wide range of support provided via the Careers and Careers & Employability teams. You are required to meet with your Postgraduate Coordinator (or equivalent) at the start of your degree to introduce yourself on an informal basis. You should make your own arrangements for this meeting.
King's Foundations seeks to support international students studying at King's. Postgraduate research students can access online English language training via KEATS (the virtual learning environment). Please note that no responsibility will be taken by the Faculty in the event of candidates having to withdraw from a course, or extend its duration, as a result of inadequate English language skills.
It is important that you maintain regular contact with your supervisors and the university throughout the period of your registration. Failure to do so may result in your temporary suspension from the university and, ultimately, the termination of your studies The King’s Doctoral College publishes a monthly email newsletter that provides updates on crucial information for doctoral students. If you are a part-time student, who is also a member of staff, you will automatically be allocated a second email address and PAWS account, reflecting your status as a student. You must arrange with the IT department for emails to be forwarded to the correct account. You will however need to keep a record of your student PAWS login details as this will be required for student activities, such as online enrolment. Official notifications will also be sent by post so please ensure that you notify your local Records Centre immediately of any changes to your home or term-time addresses, in addition to your department.
A student may only be permitted to spend part of their programme in "off-campus study" provided the King's Academic Regulations (section 6.5) are adhered to.
Information on tuition fees, the fee payment schedule and recognised methods of payment can be found on our Credit Control’s Student Fees Hub. If you are not invoiced by King’s, there may be a different payment schedule to follow.
Please note that we do not offer the option to make a tuition fee payment in pound sterling (GBP) with a non-UK issued card as these transactions are expensive to process.
To help keep you safe, please be aware of common scams and areas of risk that may affect students making payments. Find out more on our student fee fraud and/or scams webpage.
If all or part of your fees will be paid by a sponsor (e.g. government, employer, NHS, or other organisation) then a letter from your sponsor confirming their agreement MUST be provided when completing the enrolment process. Without this written confirmation from your sponsor, all invoices for fees will be sent to you. This includes the payment for bench fees, where these are required. Fees that are paid by a sponsor do not qualify for instalments and must be paid in full as soon as the invoice is received. Please note that a student supported by a friend/relative will be regarded as responsible for their own fees, plus any other costs associated with the research project.
Students, who are staff members of the university or its associated Trusts and are funded by an internal source should attach written confirmation from the grant holder of the internal university grant code (including subjective code) and the source of the funding (i.e. charity, industry etc.). Self-financing students will be invoiced for tuition fees from the university's Credit Control department; please contact them directly. Details can be found on the Student fees hub webpage if you have questions regarding payment. To help keep you safe, please be aware of common scams and areas of risk that may affect students making payments, more information can be found on our student fees webpages. Self-financing students will be responsible for the payment of tuition fees and must also cover any other costs associated with the research project. Please note that students still owing fees at the time of submission will not have the result of their viva released.
Please contact your faculty or department for any queries regarding any bench fees you must pay.
If your faculty require you to complete a Project Approval Form, this form includes details about any bench fees and additional research costs. These bench fees and research costs are in addition to the tuition fees.
If you have been assigned home fees, the eligibility criteria for a student loan is set by Student Finance England and may differ to the criteria defining who is eligible for home fee status.
For the latest guidance regarding eligibility for a Student Finance Loan, please see the Postgraduate Doctoral Loan webpage.
Contact the Admissions team by sending us a message via your King’s Apply account. We ask that you select the most relevant message category if you have more than one query, rather than sending multiple messages.
Please note during busy periods there may be a delay in responding to you, but we will reply to you as soon as we can.
Some of the questions above already indicate when you should send the Admissions team a message, but we have listed some scenarios here for you:
Information regarding enrolment does not get sent via the Admissions Office, but should you require more information you can use Student Services Online or ask Student Services a question via our webpage.
