Start in Guy’s campus gardens. Walk straight through the arches, through the black gates, and left out of campus with the Shard on your right.
Cross Borough High Street into Borough Market. Borough Market is one of the largest and oldest food markets in London. Walking down Bedale Street, the Globe tavern is on your right. Further down on the right is Southwark Cathedral. Follow Cathedral Street taking a slight left towards the large ship. The original Golden Hinde circumnavigated the globe between 1577 and 1580, captained by Sir Francis Drake. Turn left at Pickford’s Wharf. On the left you will see part of the Great Hall of Winchester Palace. Built the early 13th century, Winchester Palace was once one of the largest and most important buildings in medieval London.
Further down on the left you will see the Clink Prison Museum. Clink Prison dates back to 1144 and is likely England’s oldest prison. Continue through the arch and take a right at the Anchor Pub on Bankend Street. Continue left along the Thames and through the arch under Southwark Bridge. Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre can be seen on your left, one of King’s famous London partners. Continue towards the Tate Modern which is based in the old Bankside Power Station.
Cross over Millennium Bridge and walk towards St Paul’s Cathedral, one of the UK’s most iconic buildings. Take the stairs down on the left-hand side.
Take a right at the bottom of the stairs and walk along the North bank. On your right you will pass Piers Nicholson’s polar sundial, followed by the site of Banyard’s Castle. Walk under Blackfriars Bridge and continue down the North bank.
Further down is the King George V Silver Jubilee monument. Directly across the street from here is the Middle Temple Gardens and Foundation made famous by Charles Dickens. This spot is the famous meeting point from Charles Dickens novel Martin Chuzzlewit. Dickens himself was a member of the Middle Temple.
Cross Victoria Embankment Gardens at Temple Station. Walk up the stairs and turn left. Take a right up Surrey Street. On your left is the Strand Lane Roman Baths, the remains of 17th century cistern which fed the fountains in the old Somerset House gardens. At the top of the street you will see the King’s Language Centre. You’ll also find the old Aldwych tube station, which was used as an air raid shelter during World War II and as a storage depot for artefacts from the British Museum.
