About the Institution
Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is one of the leading higher educational institutions in Germany and is situated in Berlin's unique and historical city centre. With Humboldt Winter and Summer University (HUWISU), the university has offered an intense 2-4 week summer and winter programme for over 10 years. It gives students the opportunity to explore Humboldt-Universität, the city of Berlin, and German culture. HUWISU offers a great variety of interdisciplinary subject courses taught in English and German language courses. The courses target international undergraduates, Master's students, Ph.D. candidates, and recent graduates. Annually, more than 600 students from all over the world study together in our HUWISU courses, where they make lasting friendships and benefit from unforgettable experiences in Berlin. While gaining knowledge and meeting international students, HUWISU participants are welcome to join the extra-curricular activities to experience Berlin life, and learn about its history and culture.
Who can apply?
The HUWISU Summer School Programme is open to Undergraduate, Postgraduate Taught and Postgraduate Research students.
Courses offered
HUWISU offers courses on German language (two levels depending on proficiency), as well as subject based courses in Metropolitan Studies & Urban Development, Social Sciences, Politics & History, Law & Economics and more. Some courses are taught in German, therefore, students will need to check this information before selecting their course. The final Course List will be available in December via the link below.

Programme dates
There are 2 sessions run by HUWISU on the following dates: Session 1: Monday 15th June 2026 - Friday 10th July 2026 Session 2: Monday 13th July 2026 - Friday 7th August 2026
Application deadlines
If you wish to apply for a place on the HUWISU Programme, you will need to submit your Global Summer Exchange application by 11:59pm on Monday 5th January 2026. If your application is successful, you will be required to apply directly to Humboldt University by Friday 15th May 2026.
What are the costs?
There are no fees associated with the HUWISU Programme, however, students will only receive a waiver for 1 course, therefore, if you wish to take more than 1 course, you ill be responsible for covering the cost, but will receive a partner discount. Students who are successful in their application will receive a tuition fee waiver, but will be responsible for all other costs, including, flights, accommodation, visas, health/medical insurance (if compulsory), living expenses and those listed above. Humboldt University have also shared the following information for students who wish to apply for a Scholarship: Scholarships for participation in courses at the winter and summer universities are not awarded by Humboldt-Universität Zu Berlin, but by external institutions. For detailed information on Santander Consumer Bank scholarships, please visit the Santander Open Academy database or contact the HUWISU Office. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) also awards scholarships. Information on country-specific application deadlines and funding requirements can be found on the DAAD website. It is also highly recommended that you search the DAAD Scholarship Database and contact a DAAD office in your home country. Some other sources that may provide information on country-specific funding include your home university, organizations in cooperation with Germany, scholarship databases of the Ministry of Education and other state institutions in your country of origin or country of residence. The application deadlines usually differ from those of HUWISU, so please inform yourself six to eight months before the start of the course. PLEASE NOTE: The Global Mobility Office or HUWISU, cannot help you with your scholarship applications, and so any application for an external Scholarship will be an independent process.
Accommodation
Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin does not provide student accommodation for short-term programmes, however, to make your journey easier to manage, HUWISU support you in your search for adequate housing in Berlin. Once you have been admitted to the programme, HUWISU will provide recommendations and practical tips that will help you find a decent place to stay for the duration of the program.
