5 reasons you should join the Student Life Content Creators Programme

If you’re reading this, you’re probably interested in joining our new Student Life Content Creators Programme, run by the Student Content Management team. I’ve been creating content for them for over a year now, starting as a summer intern and progressing to being a full-time Student Content Officer. I have loved working here, so I’m the perfect person to tell you why you should join the team.

Reason 1: Getting work experience

One of the most obvious benefits of becoming a Student Life Content Creator is gaining valuable work experience, especially if you’re looking to enter fields like communications or marketing. I used content I created as examples when applying for graduate jobs. I got quite a few interviews and ended up landing my current job, which shows that my work stands out to employers. Creating content also helped me learn how to tell a compelling story and capture an audience, which is vital for writing job applications.

 

Reason 2: Gaining transferrable skills

Besides work experience, I’ve developed a lot of transferrable skills. Persuasive writing has come in handy for coursework, and I’ve also strengthened my research skills undertaking various assignments. I’ve enjoyed writing articles about what to do during the winter break, Women's history month and Pride month. This involved investigating different events and activities in King’s and around London. Finding and consolidating this information in an engaging way has been great practice for writing essays ahead of my final year, and I saw a significant impact on my grades as a result.

Another great skill I developed is time management, which is important no matter what career path you end up pursuing. Balancing my studies with work has pushed me to discover how to create a schedule that works for me, boosting my productivity.

 

Reason 3: Networking opportunities

You’ll have the opportunity to network with a diverse range of colleagues at King’s. Our team is a chatty bunch so there’s always someone to talk to. Collaboration is encouraged so I’ve worked with other team members on content, like promotional Instagram videos, which is a great way to get to know your colleagues. The Student Content Management team also works with services across King’s. I’ve met a ton of people and learnt about other roles, from librarians to events coordinators, opening my eyes to a range of different career paths. Networking is so important in the early stages of your career and King’s is a great place to start.

 

Reason 4: Support from King’s staff

No matter what your goals are, the Student Content Management team are super supportive. Whenever I submit my work, the team have taken time to go through what I’ve done and give me actionable feedback so that I can continuously learn and improve.

There have also been a myriad of opportunities for training and development tailored to my interests. For example, I recently mentioned that I want more experience with data analytics and now I’m working on evaluating our communications campaign for graduation. If you want to explore an interest, the team are always happy to accommodate and, as part of the programme, you will be able to pitch your own content ideas.

 

Reason 5: Making a difference

I’ve found creating content extremely rewarding. I’m able to make a difference for others, whether that be recommending places for students to visit in London or informing people on what support is available to them. One occasion that stands out is when I wrote an article about having a hidden disability to promote the introduction of the Sunflower Lanyard Scheme to King’s. My lecturer approached me after class to say that they hadn’t known about the scheme before reading my article and it helped her to understand people with hidden disabilities better. Knowing that my work had directly impacted someone in the King’s community made me feel that what I was doing was meaningful.
