The Impact of Covid Restrictions in Low and Middle Income Countries
The Impact of Covid Restrictions in Low and Middle Income Countries Project was jointly developed by Professor Toby Green (Department of History), Dr Aleida Borges (Global Institute for Women’s Leadership), and two third sector organisations: Collateral Global and the Institute of Development Studies. The initiative sought to deepen the impact of a conference held in 2023 focused on exploring the impact of Covid restrictions in the Global South, particularly upon human rights and those in poverty.
A conference, entitled ‘The Impact of Covid Restrictions in Low and Middle Income Countries’ was attended by the above parties and held at King’s College London in April 2023. Academics from countries all over the world, including India, Turkey, Angola, Cabo Verde, Kenya, and Argentina, provided insights into how Covid lockdowns impacted their nations. Drawing upon contributions from all who attended the conference, academics and other stakeholders drafted a detailed policy statement examining the impact of Covid in low and middle incomes countries.
Aims
A key aim of the project was drawing the attention of both policy-makers and the wider public in the West to the range of negative impacts Covid lockdown has had on low and middle income countries. To this end, Green presented the policy statement at a United Nations High-Level Political Conference side-panel event in July 2023. Additionally, he has sought to raise awareness of the manner in which lockdowns have disproportionally impacted the global poor by penning articles for media publications such as UnHerd and the New Statesman. The ongoing efforts of Collateral Global ensure that recordings of participants’ contributions during the conference will soon be available to view online.
