Social, ethical and cultural impacts of genetic prenatal screening technologies on experience and personhood: synthesising Biochemistry and Ultrasound technologies with Live Performance, Visual and Aural Media

Investigators: G. Hundt*, C.Bryanston, J.Sandall, K. Spencer.

Project Funding: Wellcome Trust Sci-Art Programme

Inside View was a piece developed from completed ESRC funded research, exploring dilemmas for women and health professionals of prenatal genetic screening. Followed by a panel discussion and evaluation post performance, varied audiences in London and the Midlands were engaged in debate and reflection on the dilemmas of prenatal genetic screening that was relevant to them professionally and personally. Knowledge translation through applied theatre is an effective tool for engaging the public but the impact subsequently is unclear. There are also ethical issues of unexpected disclosure during discussion post performance.
