King’s has a strong tradition of medieval history. Medievalists in the department (and their students) work on the entirety of the medieval period, from c. 400 to 1500 CE, across a large swathe of Eurasia and North Africa, from Britain to the Eurasian steppe and from Siberia to the Mediterranean, via Scandinavia, the Frankish kingdoms, the Byzantine empire, and Rus. We work with a wide range of approaches - cultural, economic, social, political – and using a large variety of sources and methods, with a particular emphasis on manuscript studies and textual criticism. What we all have in common is an interest in the transformation of cultures, economic practices and polities over the long term.
The Medieval History research hub brings together historians working on any aspect of the period 400-1500 CE across Eurasia and Africa.
