Biography

[BDS, MSc, PhD, M.Endo RCS (Eng), M Endo (RCSEd), Specialist list in Endodontics, FHEA]

Sadia is a Clinical Lecturer/Honorary NHS Consultant in Endodontology at King’s College London, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. She distributes her time between providing clinical service to the GSTT and leading her research group. At King’s she is responsible for the training of Endodontics Postgraduates, along with being the Endodontics Clinical Lead for Dental Undergraduates.

Sadia qualified as a dentist from Army Medical College (University of Sciences and Technology), Pakistan in 2002. She gained her Master’s in Oral Pathology/Sciences in 2007 from Queen Mary, University of London and subsequently received her PhD in Endodontics (Microbiology) from King’s College London in 2011. Since then, she has worked at King’s in various roles as Post-doc, Clinical Research Associate, Clinical Teacher and Registrar/Academic Clinical Fellow. She completed her specialist training in Endodontology and is a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh since 2020.

Sadia’s research theme is focused on investigating the Oral Host-Microbiome Interactions to identify diagnostic and prognostic markers of oral diseases and associated systemic risks. Her research has raised the significance of Apical Periodontitis as a co-morbidity and modifiable risk factor for the development of cardiometabolic diseases – a leading cause of death worldwide. She has identified specific cardiovascular disease risk biomarkers – hs-CRP, ADMA and MMP-2 - as potential prognostic biomarkers of successful root canal re-treatment and peri-apical surgery. Sadia is leading translational research to further investigate these potential diagnostic and therapeutic targets to reduce the risk of apical periodontitis associated comorbidities. She is also leading highly clinically relevant multidisciplinary research exploring novel regenerative treatment approaches to improve the prognosis of challenging cases like Endodontic-periodontal lesions. She pioneered the development of a nutrient-stressed multi-species in vitro endodontic biofilm model, which has been widely used at King’s in various projects. Utilising her extensive experience in gene sequencing techniques, she has profiled the endodontic microbiome and made a significant breakthrough in confirming the nosocomial nature of endodontic infections, thus emphasising the need for implementation of enhanced cross infection control protocol.

In 2022, Sadia was awarded the “Inspiration Full-time Clinical Lecturer Award” by the British Endodontic Society (https://www.kcl.ac.uk/news/british-endodontic-society-awards-for-dr-sadia-niazi-dr-noushad-rahim). This award recognises the outstanding skills of endodontic teachers from across all UK dental schools. Sadia is a Principal Investigator in many research grants awarded by the British Endodontic Society, European Society of Endodontology and Royal College of Surgeons of England. She has co-authored multiple publications in high impact scientific journals, written a book chapter, given several invited talks and chaired sessions/symposiums at various International scientific conferences. Sadia is a reviewer for many scientific journals. She has supervised research projects for over 25 MClinDent and PhD students. At King’s, Sadia is leading a dynamic research team to pursue the novel innovative high impact projects.
