Dr Paul Martin CBE FIET was educated at the University of Cambridge, where he acquired a first degree in natural sciences and a PhD in behavioural biology, and Stanford University, where he was Harkness Fellow in the School of Medicine. He subsequently lectured and researched in behavioural biology at the University of Cambridge and was a Fellow of Wolfson College. Paul is the author or co-author of several behavioural science books, including: Measuring Behaviour (Cambridge University Press, 1986, 1993, 2007, 4th edition in preparation); The Sickening Mind: Brain, Behaviour, Immunity and Disease (HarperCollins, 1997); Design for a Life: How Behaviour Develops (Jonathan Cape, 1999); Counting Sheep: the Science and Pleasures of Sleep and Dreams (HarperCollins, 2002); Making Happy People: the Nature of Happiness and its Origins in Childhood (Fourth Estate, 2005); Play, Playfulness, Creativity and Innovation (Cambridge University Press, 2013); and Extreme: Why Some People Thrive at the Limits (Oxford University Press, 2014). His most recent book, The Rules of Security (Oxford University Press, 2019), is about the principles and psychology of protective security and risk.
