Dr Oliver Canfell

Biography
Dr Oliver Canfell is a Lecturer in Nutritional Sciences at King’s College London, United Kingdom. Oliver is dual-registered in the UK and Australia as a Registered Dietitian (RD) with the Health & Care Professions Council (UK) and Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) and Accredited Nutritionist (AN) with Dietitians Australia.
Oliver is interested in the prevention and management of noncommunicable diseases, especially obesity, across the life course. Oliver has completed a BSc in Exercise and Nutrition Sciences (UQ), MSc in Dietetics Studies (awarded with Dean’s Commendation) (UQ), and PhD in Preventive Medicine (Obesity) (UQ) that developed a clinical prediction model to prevent childhood obesity. During his PhD, Oliver worked as a clinical paediatric dietitian in Queensland’s healthcare system, specialising in multidisciplinary obesity prevention and management with children and young people in clinical, community, and public health programs.
In 2020, Oliver was awarded a Digital Health Cooperative Research Centre (Australian Government) Emerging Leader Fellowship to undertake research on digital health transformation in Queensland. During this Fellowship, Oliver was a member of the Queensland Digital Health Centre (UQ) and established a new evidence base to support precision public health approaches to improve obesity prevention and management, including innovative methods of public health surveillance that leverages data from electronic medical records.
Oliver’s research program intersects nutrition and dietetics, digital health (clinical informatics), and health services research to achieve the Quadruple Aim of Healthcare by partnering between academia, healthcare, and industry. As an early career researcher, Oliver has been awarded >$3.5 million (AUD) as an investigator on research projects to advance obesity prevention and digital health.
Oliver is active in national research committees, including membership of the National Committee for Nutrition’s Early-Mid Career Researcher Data Stream (Australian Academy of Science), and the Research Australia Early-Mid Career Working Group. Oliver also holds an Adjunct Senior Fellow appointment with the School of Public Health, The University of Queensland.
