Nabila Naeem

NIHR Pre-Doctoral Research Fellow

Biography

Nabila Naeem completed a BSc (Hons) with a major in Computer Science and a minor in Statistics from the Department of Computer Science at Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University Peshawar. Alongside her degree, she took the initiative to enrol in and complete several additional courses, including those on Python, Machine Learning, and Statistical Learning. Her passion for research led her to select a research project to deepen her knowledge and practical research skills. Her project involved developing an Android mobile application called the "Smart Travel Guidance Application," like the Transport for London (TfL) app. Her project won first prize among competing projects from across the country in a conference organised by the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan.

After successfully completing her BSc, she began her career as a Data Analyst (Statistician) in Health Department. In this role, she applied classical statistical models and basic machine learning algorithms. She also serves as a lecturer in Computer Science at Hassan College of Nursing and Health Sciences. She further contributed to the field by submitting a research paper for publication in the Journal of Molecular Liquids.

As she advanced in her career, particularly in personalised medicine, she recognised the need to acquire advanced statistical modelling and machine learning techniques to analyse and interpret complex datasets effectively. Her growing interest in machine learning and XAI, especially in solving real-world problems like predicting drug response and disease prognosis, led her to seek further skills in these areas. Her work in the medical field as a Statistician fuelled her desire to expand her knowledge in methods for predicting disease diagnosis and classification.

Despite her relatively short experience in the field, she determined to become a skilled researcher in precision medicine, utilising modern analytical methods based on artificial intelligence. She is particularly interested in understanding the factors that enable some decision models to be successfully implemented in clinical settings while others are not, and she is currently doing MSc in Applied Statistical Modelling and Health Informatics course funded National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR).
