Dr Federica Lucivero

Senior Researcher in Ethics and Data at the Ethox Centre in the Nuffield Department of Population Health at the University of Oxford

  • Co-Director of SHADE

Biography

Building on her disciplinary background in philosophy and ethics of technology, Federica brings expertise into the conceptual analysis of the epistemic and moral assumptions in people's beliefs and positions. In her work, she also analyses the normative implications of these assumptions. Federica works with qualitative data where she can explore the meanings and values that guide decision-makers in the context of digitally-enabled health.

Federica wants to explore what sustainability means (and should mean) in practice beyond the rhetorical constructions and the vague ideology. How do we understand sustainability in the context of digitally-enabled healthcare? How should we factor environmental impacts into our decision-making processes in this context? Federica wants to explore these questions in situated contexts. She believes we should not import standards and values from one country to the rest of the world, and she would like to investigate how we can develop principles and practices that are both generalisable and yet situated.

SHADE Research Hub

SHADE sits at the intersection of Sustainability, Health, AI, Digital technologies and the Environment. SHADE is guided by a fundamental question: How should the balance between AI/digital enabled health and planetary health be struck in different areas of the world, and what should be the guiding principles? To address this SHADE promotes interdisciplinary enquiry to understand and make visible sustainable practices situated in specific geographical and societal contexts. Undertaking both normative and solutions based research, SHADE draws on empirical, epistemic and ethical perspectives from philosophy, law, sociology and ethics, as well as from more quantitative approaches such as life cycle sustainability assessment.
