Mr Esteban Tato-Barcia
NIHR Pre-Doctoral Fellow
Biography
I'm a NIHR Pre-Doctoral Research fellow working in the BioResource theme and the King’s Genomics facility at the NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre in London.
I have spent the last five years gaining expertise in a wide range of laboratory genomics methods. I was the laboratory sample collection lead in the UKRI Urgent Public Health COVID-CNS study, coordinating blood sample processing across 13 sites.
My skill set encompasses a broad range of laboratory techniques, including NGS library preparation, Illumina platform-based high-throughput genotyping of human DNA samples for genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and epigenome-wide association studies (EWAS), and real-time PCR-based high-throughput sex identification.
In addition, I have extensive expertise in biobank management, with a proven track record in inventory management. I have also provided technical support in project creation and coordination and in the reception and processing of a diverse range of biological samples such as blood, saliva, and CSF using a LIMS management system.
My proficiency extends to DNA/RNA extraction and quantification, and I also possess experience in drafting and updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and implementing and validating LIMS systems.
As part of my NIHR Pre-Doctoral Fellowship I am pursuing a Master of Science in Applied Statistical Modelling and Health Informatics, where I am deepening my expertise in the analytical techniques and computational tools vital for modern healthcare research.
Currently, I am focusing on work in long-read sequencing using Nanopore technology, specifically targeting eating disorders samples. This cutting-edge research is poised to enhance our understanding of genomic complexity and variability, offering new vistas in genetic analysis and biomarker discovery.
