Biography

Teaching and Research

Dr John Stone teaches undergraduate and postgraduate modules on the history and theory of military strategy.

He has wide research interests, but insufficient time to indulge them all. His current projects include:

  • Investigating the role of the political imagination in strategic deliberation
  • Revisiting classic works of strategic thought, such as the writings of Antoine-Henri Jomini, Alfred Thayer Mahan and Giulio Douhet
  • Critiquing the theoretical foundations of strategic thought.

PhD Supervision

Dr John Stone has supervised numerous doctoral candidates, many of whom have gone on to careers in academia, think tanks and government service. He is currently inviting research proposals on the history of strategic thought.
