Biography

Borsha Sarker has a particular interest in educating postgraduate and undergraduate medical staff in ultrasound skills and this was the subject of her Masters dissertation, based on ICU. In 2005 she was awarded a travelling fellowship from BMUS and ASUM, to work in a major trauma centre in Liverpool, Sydney Australia, to examine the effectiveness of their Point of Care Ultrasound credentialing program.

She has academic experience as an internal and external examiner, as well as practice mentor and clinical skills trainer for the National AAA Screening Program. She was also a certified Trade Union Representative for many years, with a special interest and qualifications in Employment Law.

Borsha qualified in 1989 from Manchester as a Diagnostic Radiographer and 1992 in Medical Ultrasound from Kings College, London. She spent two years working in Sydney, Australia travelling in the Asia Pacific region, before moving to the North East in 1995.

Borsha managed the clinical vascular ultrasound service at QE Gateshead, running many educational ultrasound courses and contributing to several research projects. In 2003 she won the Venous Forum Prize from the Royal Society of Medicine for a small grant funded project on the accuracy of diagnosing calf DVT. Clinical research areas now include rheumatology, musculoskeletal, inflammatory arthritis and vasculitis (GCA). Her Rheumatology team at Leeds Teaching Hospitals won the BSR Best Practice Award for their GCA service developments in 2022.

Borsha was an elected member of Council for the British Medical Ultrasound Society and in 2013 was the Chair of its successful 45th Annual Scientific Meeting at The Sage, Gateshead, which she gives as her greatest and most challenging professional undertaking. She enjoys volunteering for sports events every year since the London 2012 Olympics. Outside work she has a large and demanding menagerie of furry and feathered friends!
