Biography
Professor Bijan Modarai is a vascular surgeon scientist at King’s and a Consultant Vascular Surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust since 2012. In 2026 he was appointed as the Professor of Surgery for King's Health Partners and Director of the King’s Centre for Academic Surgery. He has held successive fellowships from the British Heart Foundation from PhD through Intermediate and Senior Clinical Research Fellowships to Programme Grant level funding. He was awarded a Hunterian Professorship by The Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2017. He currently leads translational programmes spanning vascular biology, imaging science, computational modelling and data enabled research, leveraging international multidisciplinary collaborative teams. His work on pro angiogenic monocytes has defined a novel therapeutic target in limb ischaemia and progressed from mechanistic studies to early phase clinical trials. In parallel, he has developed innovative imaging and computational approaches to aortic disease.
Clinically, he is recognised as a key opinion leader for management of complex aortic disease, including endovascular aortic repair, reflected by an extensive invited lecture portfolio, and leadership of major international scientific initiatives. He directs the Interdisciplinary Aortic Dissection Symposium, an established international forum for addressing unresolved challenges in aortic disease. He has chaired the European Society for Vascular Surgery radiation protection guidelines committee and continues to contribute to international guideline development and consensus activity. He is a past President of the British Society of Endovascular Therapy.
He is Director of the King’s Centre for Doctoral Training in Translational Research in Advanced Therapies, leading a cross disciplinary training programme. He has established the King’s Cardiovascular Biobank, creating a critical platform for linking biological samples with clinical and imaging data at scale. He is Head of Section and Clinical Theme Lead for the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine & Sciences, where he has driven integration between research and clinical strengths.
