Dr Augusto W. M. Teixeira Júnior is an Associate Professor at the Federal University of Paraíba, Brazil. He holds a PhD in Political Science and a BA in Social Sciences. He completed a postdoctoral internship at the Meira Mattos Institute – Brazilian Army Command and General Staff School.

From 2018 to 2021, Dr Teixeira Júnior was a Researcher at the Army Centre for Strategic Studies (CEEEx) on Geopolitics and Military Strategies. He is currently a researcher of the CAPES PROCAD-DEFESA 2019 programme 'Missiles and Rockets in National Defence: The Astros System as an Element of Military Transformation'. Since 2012, he has led the Research Group on Strategic Studies and International Security (GEESI). He has received a research productivity fellowship (PQ) from the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) to research comparative conventional deterrence strategies.

Dr Teixeira Júnior is also a member of the Brazilian Association of Defence Studies, where he served as financial and publications director. From 2020 to 2022, he was the Chief Editor of the Brazilian Journal of Defence Studies (RBED). Since 2011, he has actively participated in lecturing at Extension Courses and Academic Congresses organised by the Brazilian Ministry of Defence.

Before becoming a Visiting Senior Research Fellow at King’s, for which he was awarded a scholarship from the CAPES Foundation, he participated in programmes and courses in the United States, including the US Department of State International Security and Non-Proliferation Study Tour and the William J. Perry Centre for Hemispheric Defence Studies (WPJC) Strategy and Defence Policy Course.

Teixeira Junior teaches in the Department of International Relations at UFPB and the Political Science and International Relations Graduate Programme at UFPB. He teaches and supervises undergraduate and graduate students in geopolitics, great power competition, deterrence theory, and missiles in both programmes.

Dr Teixeira Junior's research centres on the intersection of geopolitics and military strategy. He researches the impact of the development of surface-to-surface missile systems on the balance of power in South America, as well as the comparative analysis of similar advancements in Russia, China, and India, through PROCAD-DEFESA. He is currently focusing on the group's study on strategic-operational scenario development. These investigations, in turn, are related to the comparative study of conventional deterrence, which is the focus of his CNPq PQ research fellowship project, which aims to understand how countries implement conventional deterrence policies by comparing cases from Brazil, Russia, India, and China.
