Anna-Katharine Brem

Senior Researcher and Group Leader

Biography

PD Dr Anna-Katharine Brem is a senior researcher at the Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing at King’s College London and a group leader at the Department of Old Age Psychiatry at the University of Bern, Switzerland.

Anna-Katharine Brem holds a PhD and a Master of Advanced Studies in Neuropsychology from the University of Zurich and is a certified clinical neuropsychologist and supervisor. Following her doctoral studies, she completed postdoctoral fellowships at Harvard Medical School and the University of Oxford. She later combined research with clinical practice as a senior researcher and Head of Neuropsychology at the Max-Planck Institute of Psychiatry in Munich, Germany, and at the Memory Clinic of Central Switzerland. She has taught at Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich and is currently teaching at the University of Bern.

Anna-Katharine Brem is a recognised expert in the field of non-invasive brain stimulation, focusing on its integration with other methodologies – such as cognitive and motor interventions and electroencephalography - to explore synergistic effects and neurophysiological moderators for enhancing personalised interventions. Her research also extends to the application of digital technologies in ageing and neurodegenerative diseases. She has co-developed two cognitive training apps and is currently funded by Alzheimer Switzerland to expand one of these apps for use in care home settings.

Since joining King’s College London in 2022, Anna-Katharine Brem has authored several high-impact publications on digital technologies, exploring their feasibility, inclusion of individuals living with dementia, and regulatory considerations. She recently received a JPND grant to lead a working group focused on digital technologies to assess cognition and function in Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias. In addition to her involvement in the RADAR-AD research project, she is currently contributing her expertise in digital health technologies to two large-scale European research projects (PREDICTOM and EPND) and the NIHR HealthTech Research Centre in Brain Health.
