Biography

Ann-Marie Towers joined King’s in September 2024 from the University of Kent where she was Professor of Social Care Research in the Centre for Health Services Studies (CHSS). She holds an Honorary contract with the University of Kent and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). She is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Primary Health Care Research and Development and Advisory Board for the Centre for Applied Dementia Studies (CfADS) and a committee member on the NIHR Research Programme for Social Care (RPSC).

Ann-Marie is a mixed-methods researcher, using qualitative and quantitative techniques and has particular expertise in outcome measurement. Between January 2014 and July 2024 Ann-Marie led an international programme of work to develop and support the use of the Adult Social Care Outcomes Toolkit (ASCOT), fostering collaborations with academics and private sector partners in the UK, Denmark, Finland, Australia, Spain, Norway and Sweden. She led research to develop and refine a mixed-methods tool for use in care homes, an Easy Read tool for older adults, an adaptation of ASCOT for use in care planning, and is currently leading the development of a new measure of care work-related quality of life for the social care workforce (ASCOT-Workforce).

Ann-Marie is committed to building research capacity within the social care sector and leads an NIHR funded research practice partnership (the Kent Research Partnership) with Kent County Council. She has long-standing collaborations with sector representatives, include the National Care Forum, Skills for Care and the Homecare Association.

Prof Towers is co-lead of the major Adult Social Care Workforce Research Partnership: the Care Work project.
