UK's first MedTech Venture Builder backs 12 new companies

The London Institute for Healthcare Engineering (LIHE) has launched its inaugural MedTech Venture Builder programme, funded by Research England.

Venture builder launch

In a UK first, 12 companies have been selected to undertake the ground-breaking, 12-month programme that will provide the structures that are critical to building a robust MedTech company. These include regulatory plans, clinical evidence roadmaps and stakeholder mapping, all within a fit-for-purpose, medical grade, Quality Management System (QMS). This executive support is delivered by King’s specialist in-house translation teams, all housed in LIHE.

The aspiring MedTech companies, who are developing innovative products ranging from pure Software as a Medical Device to active implants and advanced surgical robotics, have further been matched with experts-in-residence to provide extensive hands-on guidance and monthly strategic progress reviews. Importantly, all the companies will receive guidance from one of the UK’s foremost innovation consultancies, Cambridge Consultants, who are a strategic partner to the programme.

I found it truly inspiring to participate in the launch day of the Venture Builder programme and witness the incredible innovation and energy from all the new businesses. The enthusiasm and creativity on display at LIHE were remarkable, and I am excited to see the amazing developments that will emerge from this initiative.

The MedTech Venture Builder is a collaborative effort delivered by a consortium made up of four partner institutions, with King’s College London as the lead and working in partnership with Queen Mary University of London, City University of London, and St George’s University of London, to create a Collaborative Centre of Excellence (CCoE) for Medical Device translation. The program is delivered by King’s College London at LIHE.

Cutting-edge MedTech research requires extensive translation support to achieve real clinical and commercial impact. With the support of Research England, King’s College London, and in collaboration with our consortium partners, our MedTech Venture Builder has become the destination for promising startups from across the UK to receive this critical support. We are proud to be leading this ground-breaking effort, and we are looking forward to expanding it further in the near future.
