The inaugural Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies (SPLAS) Film Festival 2025 takes place from 28 January to 11 March, featuring five movies spanning cultures and genres.

Miriam Talabi, a student on the Management & Modern Languages BA, curated the event in partnership with Pragda, which provided a selection of Latin American films for the festival. Miriam and other final-year Spanish students watched trailers to choose the line-up of films, striking a balance between light-hearted stories and thought-provoking themes.

What I love most about SPLAS cinema is how it allows you to fully immerse yourself in a culture in a way only film can. Unlike reading, where translations and imagination play a big role, cinema provides a visual and emotional experience that brings the culture to life.

It's great that we have established this film festival this academic year. This is a wonderful way both to bring our community together, and to explore collectively and collaboratively the many different experiences and worlds which make up those of Spain, Portugal and Latin America.

Each screening is followed by a short discussion offering the chance to dive deeper into the film’s themes. All screenings are shown in the film’s original language with subtitles in English.

The first screening on 28 January features 7 Raons per Fugir (7 Reasons to Run Away), a Catalan and Spanish film with English subtitles. Shown in collaboration with the King’s Business School, the follow-up discussion will focus on the absurdity of modern society and economic structures.
