Language Consultant Tony Thorne of the Modern Language Centre argues that the Government should be consulting linguists to help the public better understand the new complex language and messages of Covid19.
Tony is compiling a database of the vast amount of new vocabulary which has emerged as a result of the pandemic, including popular slang words. He is studying the cultural and societal impact of the new specialist language which can be overwhelming for the public.
There is also a need for linguists to input to effective communications on the frontline, argues Thorne.
