From September 2018 King’s College London’s Widening Participation Department will be working in partnership with the Amos Bursary to offer two scholarships for undergraduate study at the university.

With the aim of addressing the disparity in degree attainment between Black and White UK-domiciled students, these scholarships will be available to British males of African or Caribbean heritage who hold an offer to study a full time undergraduate degree at King’s. Successful applicants will be awarded £1,000 a year for the full duration of their course.

The partnership with the Amos Bursary is part of the Widening Participation Department and King’s commitment to improving the Black and Minority Ethnic student experience. The Equality Challenge Unity’s Equality in Higher Education report (2014) showed that whilst 73.8% of White UK-domiciled students received a first or upper second class honours degree, this figure stood at only 46.8% for Black UK-domiciled students. King’s has set a Key Performance Indicator and pledged through its OFFA Access Agreement to reduce the gap in first class degree attainment by 2% annually.

'Earlier this year I wrote in  Wonkhe about the need to work in partnership with community organisations to effect change. I am delighted we are now formalising our partnership with Amos Bursary to support black-Caribbean boys’ success at King’s, said Kate Kettle, the Deputy Director of the Widening Participation Department.

As part of the scholarship, holders will be invited to join the prestigious Amos Bursary programme. The Amos Bursary was established in 2009 to redress the under-representation in leading Higher Education institutions and the professions of young British men of African and Caribbean descent. Participants on the programme will be able to access a range of opportunities, including professional mentoring and networking events, which are designed to develop the skills and experience required to make informed decisions about their futures.
