New research centre aims to enhance understanding of nomadic cultures
A new research centre at King’s will seek to enhance understanding of nomadic cultures across the world.

The Centre for Nomadic Studies will be dedicated to studying the political economy of nomadic cultures and will be a home to both new research and act as a digital archive for a range of historical documents from explorers and travel writers.
The centre was founded by Dr Sam DeCanio, from the Department of Political Economy, with funding support from the Royal Geographical Society’s Thesiger Oman International Fellowship and from the department.
The centre has already digitised extensive archival material, including journals, correspondence, and pictures from writers including T.E. Lawrence and Bruce Chatwin. A King’s student, Filwa Aldughaither assisted Dr DeCanio by conducting interviews with Bedouin in Saudi Arabia.
