Staff from the School of Education Community and Society have recently developed a new online course titled ‘Building a Teaching Career: A Step by Step Guide’.

Produced in collaboration with FutureLearn and McGraw Hill, the course follows the release of the sixth edition of the highly respected teacher education resource book Becoming a Teacher in April 2023.

The course adapts material from the latest edition of Becoming a Teacher and is written for those who are about to enter teacher education, or for anyone considering a career as a teacher. The course book was written by School of Education, Community and Society staff members and edited by Simon Gibbons, Richard Brock, Melissa Glackin, Lizzie Rushton and Emma Towers.

Spanning 10 hours, the online programme is broken up into five two-hour modules across five weeks. The course intends to reflect the relationship between theory and practice that its editors believe is at the heart of becoming an effective teacher.

The course covers key topics such as education policy, teacher identity, and teacher well-being and all modules are underpinned by detailed research conducted by ECS academics.
