Unlike other projects that focus on EU-UK relations, which approach their relationship from the perspective of divergence and the corresponding challenges, this centre will focus on the future relationship through the lens of convergence and shared interests and thus will benefit debates and policymaking

New Jean Monnet centre will focus on the next generation of EU/UK relations
A prestigious new research centre at King’s College London will explore the future of the relationship between the UK and European Union.
King’s has been selected to host the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on Next Generation EU-UK Relations (JMCE NEXT-REL), a multi-year programme that will bring together scholars from a range of disciplines to examine new forms of co-operation and governance.
The centre will be a focal point for collaboration between staff and students studying the European Union across the Faculty of Social Science and Public Policy and Dickson Pool School of Law and will be led by Professor Leila Simona Talani, Professor Christopher Meyer, Professor Oana-Andreea Stefan, Professor Andea Biondi, and Dr Scott James.
Prof Talani, from the Department of European and International Studies, said: “The aim of the centre is to provide a forward-thinking, focused platform for analysing areas where the EU and UK may be able to deepen their co-operation and for enhancing understanding and debate about the evolving relationship among students, civil society, and the public.
Professor Oana-Andreea Stefan, from The Dickson Poon School of Law, said: “The Centre of European Law (CEL) is thrilled to be part of the latest iteration of the Jean Monnet Centre. It is more important than ever that we continue to deepen our understanding of the way in which the UK interacts with the EU, particularly through the lens of law.
“We have a rich history of studying the relationship between the UK and the EU at the CEL and we look forward to working with colleagues on an interdisciplinary level to research and deliver impact in this area.”
Dr Isidora Maletic, from The Dickson Poon School of Law, will be leading a teaching module as part of the centre programme.
JMCE NEXT-REL is the only Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence in London to focus on EU-UK future relations and will create opportunities for discussion between scholars, officials, practitioners and the wider public. It will run until 2027.
A programme of activities is planned, including an annual conference and key note lecture, a school of diplomacy aimed at practitioners, a series of teaching modules at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and a programme of academic publications.
