Funding the future of sustainability education

Announcing the winners of the 2024 Education for Sustainability Projects Fund

Group discussion at Climate & sustainability month

Twelve ambitious projects have secured a total of £92,000 in the inaugural round of the Education for Sustainability Projects Fund.

The fund, offered for the first time in the 2023/24 academic year, was open to academic and teaching staff across King’s to support the embedding of Education for Sustainability (EfS) within curricula.

The projects, awarded in March 2024, all aim to enhance sustainability within the education structures of their departments.

From a King’s Food Living Laboratory to decrease food waste whilst educating students on human health to exploring data-driven climate adaptation and creating frameworks for putting climate at the heart of curricula, the projects all explore innovative and thorough solutions for sustainable education.

Rosie Smith, Programme Director for King’s Climate & Sustainability, said:

These projects demonstrate the innovation of our teaching staff – and the hunger across the University for driving sustainability into our curriculum. We were delighted to have been able to fund so many wonderful projects, especially across such a wide range of disciplines. Sustainability is important to every subject, so the breadth of projects here is a really exciting indication of the enthusiasm of our teaching community to create a more resilient, robust framework for a sustainable future.

A vital element of achieving UN Sustainable Development Goal 4, quality education, Education for Sustainability provides a meeting of subject-specific disciplinary knowledge, sustainability knowledge and competencies that together motivate and empower students to put their academic learning into action, often in the face of competing priorities.
