Celebrating long serving members of the King's community

This year we celebrated 57 of our colleagues from across the University for their decades of service to King’s.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Shitij Kapur, who hosted the 2024 Long Service Awards ceremony, thanked colleagues for their dedication and commitment to King’s.

‘Through your commendable years of service, you have not only witnessed the evolution of our institution, but you’ve played an active role in its growth. We are very grateful for all you have done to enable so many generations of students to grow, learn and develop during their time with us. Thank you for all your contributions.’

The ceremony was an opportunity for celebration and reflection, as colleagues looked back on their history at King’s. ‘It’s been an honour and a pleasure to be first a student, and then a researcher and teacher in the amazing War Studies Department at King’s College London,’ reflected Dr Domitilla Sagramoso, Senior Lecturer in Security and Development. ‘I am for ever grateful for all the opportunities that King’s has given me, and for all the support that I’ve received throughout the years.’

‘I started as an engineer in 1999,’ added Crauston Coleman, ‘before moving into security where I have worked for 25 years! It’s been a privilege to have been a part of this celebration.’

Michael Escudier, Professor of Oral Medicine and Education, and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences, looked back on his time at King’s.

‘Despite all the changes over the last 25 years, what remains unchanged is King’s ability to attract and retain high-quality and committed staff who contribute so much to our community. My own journey, like that of so many others, has only been made possible by the ongoing support of friends and colleagues who have enabled me to learn, develop, and grow. I look forward to many more years at King’s.’

Dr Susan John, Senior Lecturer in the Peter Gorer Department of Immunobiology, also pointed to the indelible impact made by students and staff. ‘I have really enjoyed my interactions and collaborations with many talented colleagues, as well as the teaching side of my work at King’s – getting to know our students and contributing to the work King’s is doing in Widening Participation.’

Curator of the Gordon Museum of Pathology, Bill Edwards, who received an award for nearly 45 years of service, also reflected on his time at the University:

‘The thing that’s given me the most satisfaction is still teaching undergraduates. Universities like ours exist to teach. Teaching is what gets me out of bed every day, helping students to become the best professionals they can be. I even remember Michael Escudier as a PhD student! The last 45 years have been exciting, but there is still more to do, so I am looking forward to the next 45 years.’
