Bronze Reggie statue gifted to Hong Kong Alumni Association

Alumnus William Kwan FKC (Law, 1959) has gifted a specially commissioned bronze Reggie statue to the King’s Hong Kong Alumni Association, an organisation for which he previously served as chairman.

The statue of Reggie the lion, King’s College London’s mascot, is one of two statues William (affectionately known as ‘Willie’) had commissioned; the other one sits in ‘Willie’s Common Room’ – the space for Law students that bears his name in King’s College London's Dickson Poon School of Law. The statue was formally donated by Willie at a lunch in January 2023 at which all past chairmen of the Hong Kong Alumni Association were present.

‘Willie has been a great contributor to the King's College London Hong Kong Alumni Association, serving as chairman for many years, and then continuing to support the alumni community thereafter,’ says Dr Bertrand Leung (MBBS, 1989), who serves as the association's chairman. ‘He is very generous - not just in his donations, but also with his time, helping and advising many alumni in their social welfare as well as their career path. I would like to salute him for all that he has done for the Hong Kong alumni community.’

As a thank you for his gift, the association presented Willie with a framed photograph of President & Principal, Professor Shitij Kapur, and Professor Dan Hunter, Executive Dean of the Dickson Poon School of Law, standing by the bronze lion statue Willie donated to the university. Writing to Professor Kapur to express his thanks for the framed photograph, Willie remarked 'The photo of [Professor Shitij Kapur], Professor Dan Hunter and Reggie will be treasured always'.

The law school is incredibly grateful for Willie's support over so many years. His unstinting encouragement and financial support have made a huge difference to the lives of our students, and we cannot thank him enough. Our Hong Kong alumni have always been one of our strongest chapters and the school is so lucky to have their engagement and assistance.

In August 2022, Willie won the Grand Prix D’honor at the World Stamp Exhibition (FIP) held in Jakarta, Indonesia, where he exhibited collections of Hong Kong designs, proofs, specimens and other archival materials which had already won several prizes over the past 10 years.
